In this edition of Style Profile we’ve got Renee Runfola AKA Renee Phoenix Fit for Rivals front-women. Like she needed any introduction?! With her base-y voice, the 28 year old Florida native has been putting rock in the hearts of lesbians everywhere & racking up Ruby Rose level marriage proposals on Instagram. Her music video “Damage” has amassed over 25 million views. 867 of them I’ll admit responsibility for.
Renee, you have got the lesbians of the world in an absolute fix recently. You’ve been called a “Heart Throb”, “Rock Royalty” and a “Tattooed Dream Come True”.
I’m flattered, really. I was a dork in high school with a speech impediment. Well I’m still a dork really, so these are all compliments I never thought I’d hear!
Really?! I can’t ever picture you being considered less then A-list level by your peers! I love how much you appreciate the positive attention. You’re Instagram feed is chalked full of love professions and marriage proposals. How do you feel about that?
Again I’m flattered. I’m happy to bring out such a positive response from people.
Do you consider each marriage proposal you receive carefully?
If I did, I’d have a lot of spouses. Sister wives wouldn’t have shit on me.
Where’s my ring and cake?! More importantly, cake.
How’s chocolate? You’ve got killer style, tell me who/what influences your fashion choices?
I wear whatever is comfortable and what I feel looks good on my body. I don’t really have any curves, so I tend to wear fashion from the guys section, but nothing too overtly masculine I feel. I’m pretty down the middle.
Functionally androgynous. That’s cool and organic! What goes into your thought process in the morning when picking out an outfit?
First, I figure out what I have going on for the day. If I’m on tour, it’s usually, do I have an interview? When is the show? Etc. I’ll look at our itinerary and figure out what’s appropriate. If it were up to me it would be pajamas every day…which is really what I borderline wear on most days anyway. Roll out of bed and go!
Nice and “Effort-Lez”! Ba doom boom ching! Who is your fashion icon?
Anyone who looks like they’re owning what they’re wearing. Confidence is sexy and it’s easy to tell if someone exudes that quality.
Absolutely! What’s your favourite thing about fashion?
I’d have to say attitude. Like I was going on about confidence, vibes are important and can set the tone of a room. Wear what you feel best in…also if you die in that outfit that’s now your ghost outfit forever so it’s important to like whatever you put on in the morning.
I’ve never heard of a ghost outfit. Who’d have thought fashion could be eternal. I’m def going to be putting more thought into outfit. What advice would you give someone trying to emulate your rock star aesthetic?
I usually keep it simple. Skinnies, preferably the kind that stretch for comfort and if I eat treats throughout the day so they can expand…and a t-shirt. Be mindful of how things fit on your body, everyone is different. What may look good on someone else may not on you! Just go out and try a bunch of things and only buy it if you absolutely love it.
That’s great advice! What are your three favourite items in your closet right now?
A pair of brown leather boots I’ve had for some time, these black stretchy skinnies that I practically wear everyday. Sometimes to bed because they’re so comfortable. And a Japanese Rolling Stones sweatshirt.
That sounds like a perfect “Ghost Outfit”. How would you describe your personal style in three words?
A bit grungey, comfortable and sometimes loud. I’ve been diggin on some crazy print short sleeve button ups lately. They can be fun to wear!
You’ve got a lot of really great tattoos, what’s your favourite piece and why?
Thank you! I’d have to go with Zod the space snail on my left lower arm. It was a random piece my tattoo artist and I thought of after we did a fat dab (how else would one think of such a thing…) and it just brings a smile to my face whenever I look at it.
Would you consider Tattooing Effort-Lez on your body? If so where?
I’m running out of room so it’ll have to go somewhere hidden or on my face. Maybe in cursive as a moustache.
When I say… ____ you say… ____ a) Rock b) Black c) Animal Print
Rock…was my favorite wrestler. Black…Sabbath. Animal Print…should go on everything.
What does 2016 have in store for Renee?
Well I’m going to have to plan my year around our wedding now…but my band, Fit For Rivals, will be dropping a new album this year. We’re about to film a music video for our new single and we’ll be hitting the road later this year in support of the release. Tour details will be announced soon, so if you head on over to Facebook.com/fitforrivalsofficial or Facebook.com/iamreneephoenix you can stay in the know of all the happenings!
